Samaritans are available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
We believe in the value of having time and space to explore difficult feelings. We also believe that being listened to in confidence, and accepted without prejudice, can alleviate despair and suicidal thoughts.
Whether you are seeking support, are interested in becoming a volunteer or would just like to know more about us, we hope you will find what you are looking for on this website.
NORTH LONDON SAMARITANS
About the Branch
North London Samaritans have been based in Bounds Green, London N11 since 1975. We are a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with around 90 volunteers and no paid staff.
That means that all the things that keep the service running – managing the rota, routine administration, overseeing branch finances and premises management, recruitment, selection and training, fundraising, keeping the Centre clean and stocked with tea, coffee and biscuits – is carried out by our volunteers. All our costs must be covered by our own fundraising (we don’t receive money from the central charity). This is a dynamic and friendly Samaritans branch, with volunteers who are just ordinary people, carefully selected and trained.
In late 2018, we moved into a new, purpose-built Centre, which houses both our call centre and a community hall that we also use to host our training sessions.
Every year, this branch alone provides emotional support to more than 10,000 callers and emailers, a large proportion of whom are experiencing profound feelings of distress or despair; some are suicidal. People from all walks of life contact us, mostly from across the three London Boroughs of Enfield, Haringey and Barnet, but also from other parts of the UK or overseas.
Message from the Branch Director
Welcome to the website of North London Samaritans. We hope these pages will give you a brief overview of our work.
We are a self-financing charity of approximately 75 volunteers, all of whom are highly focused towards providing emotional support by offering a non-judgemental and confidential space for anyone who needs it.
Whilst we answer calls and e-mails from across the United Kingdom and internationally, we predominantly operate within 3 large London Boroughs which are inner city in some areas and suburban in others. This means we encounter a wide range of callers from a variety of backgrounds.
Our volunteers are specially selected and trained to be able to respond to any contact once the phone begins to ring or we receive an e-mail. We also engage in many outreach activities. Whilst our work is very challenging at times, it is immensely rewarding.
So if you’re feeling low and just need someone to talk to, you can call us any time, day or night. We’re waiting to listen and talk, without judgement, with empathy and if you can help us in any way, please get in touch; our contact details appear throughout the website.
Very best wishes,
